SparkS Saturday 11 February 7.30pm-10pm (pre-show entertainment from 5.30pm) North hagley park The sounds of summer will fill the air during the popular Sparks concert at North Hagley Park. The free family event will see the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra take concert-goers on a musical journey around the world. Preshow entertainment starts at 5.30pm with Court Jesters, Justice Brass and fairies roaming around the crowd. The CSO has been involved since the first Sparks event, 34 years ago, and form a key part of this crowd-pleasing event. The largest outdoor orchestral concert in the South Island, the main show will begin at 7.30pm with Kenneth Young conducting the CSO through the programme. From a picnic rug setting, enjoy popular pieces from Bolero to the theme song from American western Magnificent Seven. Keep an eye out for special appearances from guest performers Harry Grigg, Tama Waipara, Jennine Bailey and Fuzhun, winners of the Canterbury Regional Smokefree Rockquest. The spectacular fireworks finale will light up the sky to the rousing Sorcererâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Apprentice orchestral piece before the event finishes at 10pm. ChriStChurCh laNterN FeStival Saturday 18 aNd SuNday 19 February 5pm-10.30pm North hagley park Hundreds of vibrantly coloured lanterns will light up North Hagley Park to celebrate the Year of the Rooster at the Christchurch Lantern Festival. The Lantern Festival has been part of the Chinese New Year celebrations since the Han Dynasty (206BC-221AD). Usually held on the 15th day of the first month of the lunar calendar, it marks the end of New Year festivities. In Christchurch, the event welcomes young and old to enjoy music, performance, dance, food and fireworks and experience Chinese culture. The lanterns have been specially made for New Zealand in the Chinese province of Sichuan and include animals, scenes showing life in China and Chinese symbols of good luck. This year, the festival will showcase eight new lanterns, too. For a sneak peek, the Christchurch Casino lantern will be on show prior to the festival at the casino. SOUNDS OF SUMMER Speaking with Christine de Felice ahead of new music festival Selwyn Sounds, singer-songwriter Jason Kerrison discusses his career, music, beliefs and planetarian ventures.

Some of New Zealand’s most well-loved and iconic musicians will be ripping up the Lincoln Domain when they perform at the inaugural Selwyn Sounds music festival in March. The line-up includes bands Mi-Sex, Dragon, and Jordan Luck Band, outstanding female vocalists Sharon O’Neill, Annie Crummer, Margaret Urlich and Debbie Harwood, plus the award-winning Jason Kerrison. Over nine hours, from 11.30am-4pm, on March 4, they will present a musical cornucopia for everyone there to enjoy and reminisce over. Organisers Three Coins Gentlemen Events are aiming for a day of music, food, family and community – the first of what they hope will be an annual festival in Lincoln.

You have been at the forefront of the New Zealand music scene for quite a few years now. What have been the highlights of your career so far? The biggest achievement for me by far is Band Together for Canterbury. Our response to the earthquakes felt like a good idea at the time, but it wasn’t until we had what was later reported as 160,000-odd people at Hagley Park that we realised the scale of what we had been a part of. Giving people that reprieve for even just a day of music was mint. I felt huge pride in the team.

Being part of a band or a solo performer – do you have a preference and if so, why? Nah, I feel rapt to do all of it, to be honest. I’m definitely looking forward to smashing it out with the Fungi, though. It has been way too long since we played. Almost two decades now… jeez. Your EP #JKEP2 was an experimental work. What prompted you to produce this rather than a more conventional EP showcasing your music? I felt with Opshop I had cornered myself into commercial ballad guyville and that was never the intention. I needed a change of approach purely as an artist to stretch myself. So the space sans Opshop provided an opportunity to experiment without too much commercial concern. I came up with the idea of producing 10 EPs over time, exploring different processes in each. #JKEP1 was largely poppy acoustic electronic stuff. #JKEP2 was exploring sacred geometry and its effects in music, and #JKEP3 will be around developing songs from briefs initially used for commercial clients.

What do you regard as your greatest achievement in music? Getting the opportunity to work on very diverse projects – from being in rock bands like Opshop and Fungi and hybrid Hip Pop pyjama-wearing group The Babysitters Circus, to playing a dual role in the musical Grease earlier this year and being invited to play the drums for a band at the Dubai Sevens. Living the dream. The music you create is somewhat diverse, so what kind of composer/musician do you see yourself as? Recently I’ve tried to explore different forms in my #JKEP series, from the sacred geometry of the Golden Mean to the tuning and the universal harmonic of 432Hz instead of the typical 440Hz; just for fun experimentation. So pop experimentation at the moment I guess. I also have a publishing company called Antipodes Music Publishing and Sync (AMPS) that produces and curates music for a number of projects. So it’s very diverse in terms of activities, whether you’re writing for yourself or to brief. You get to traverse a few spaces both commercially and creatively.

How do you see your future in music? I see myself as a working musician. Whether that manifests as a soloist, a cast member of Grease, or a music producer for the Sevens. I went from touring for the new Fungi album, which has been sitting in the Top 10 Italian Rock Charts for the last few months, and writing/ composing for commercial clients to producing music for Toyota’s Global Street Band of buskers, playing drums for a band in Dubai, being the music director for the NZ Marley All-stars Tribute, and debuting a music festival, Selwyn Sounds in March with a stellar line-up. 3 NO. 13 HARCOURTS NEW ZEALAND 2012-2013

I’m thrilled and bloody lucky I get to do any of these, so I’ll just keep saying yes and getting amongst it I guess. I do want to start an ecoconscious music festival on my farm in about three years, so that’s in the mix too. New Zealand has produced some stellar musicians, both composers and performers, over the last five decades or so. Do you see that legacy continuing through today’s up-and-coming musicians and are there any that stand out? Well, I’m in my own rabbit hole so much that I don’t get exposed to nearly enough new music. But I love Joel Shadbolt at the moment. That dude’s playing and singing. Far out, one to watch for sure. I worked with him as MD on the Bob Marley Tribute Show, and he just killed it. Genius. In fact, that whole production was insanely good and cool to work with. Bob’s the man. What advice would you give to young people with musical ambitions? Primarily enjoy yourself, and savour the fact that you get to do it. In terms of making a life of it? I often say it’s good to get a handle on what your success metrics are from the beginning. Is success joining a tribute band and playing once a month for well-paying corporates? Is it touring the world playing metal festivals? Is it writing commercials? Is it a combo of many things? Dream it up and get a handle of its manifestation early. Charity work, particularly with young people, has been a feature of your career. Why do you see this as important? I basically think that if I can help I should. That’s pretty much it. You describe yourself as a ‘planetarian’. What do you mean by that and how does it manifest in your day-to-day life? I feel the most important thing we have is our planet, so I try to be present to that as much as possible as a base point. In terms of day-to-day life, I’m developing a permaculture biotecturebased retreat in the Far North. We’re trying to use as much recycled and retooled stuff as we can. For example, the Earthship we’re currently working on has earth-rammed tyres as basic building blocks. Eventually, we’d like to run workshops on the principles of resilient homes and communities along with other more esoteric interests of the retreat. So, I’m still learning a lot about it and relishing the chance to do it. Tell us about your ‘Ark’. Why did you decide to build it and is it complete yet? I wanted to build an emergency fallback shelter that would be off the grid, sustainable and be able to withstand earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and energetic solar events, away from significant fault lines with a high profile and an exceptional spring. We found a property that suited those caveats. We went through

many different phases of design but ultimately decided we’d like to try different designs around the Ecovillage over time. We’ve settled on a Michael Reynolds-inspired Earthship Hut design for the first whare and it’s an optimistic 70 per cent there. The release of the Opshop album Until The End of Time in 2010 was a good opportunity for me to chat about preparedness around concerns I had for people being ready in the event of a catastrophe, predicted or not. My personal consideration around the literature of the predictions and culture of the end times of 2012 got me invested into exploring it further and writing about it in songs. I’m what you might call an apocaloptimist, so I felt in terms of the media reporting what I was up to there was a misrepresentation to the degree that certain elements of my account were seized upon, sensationalised and tainted with whack journalism. Regardless I’m still of the opinion that ancient cultures have left clues for us about large cosmic cycles and their effects and that right now our solar system is undergoing interplanetary climate change. And climate change isn’t an earthcentric thing; cataclysmic and abrupt climate change is occurring throughout the solar system. So change is upon us. I just wanted, and still want, people to be mindful of their preparedness, and I felt talking about that the Ark within the context of the record would be a good conversation starter. That seemed to be the case ultimately regardless of whether I was literally putting a boat up on a mountain, which, by the way, I plan to do one day. Ha ha.

There has been much speculation over the years, with the two best guesses being Antonie Brentano, the daughter of a diplomat, and Josephine Brunsvik, a countess whom he deeply loved. The question of this lover was raised when a love letter, written in early July of 1812, was found in Beethoven’s personal belongings shortly after his death. It was addressed to an ‘Immortal Beloved’ and read: Though still in bed, my thoughts go out to you, my Immortal Beloved, Be calm – love me – today – yesterday – what tearful longings for you – you – you – my life – my all – farewell. Oh continue to love me – never misjudge the most faithful heart of your beloved. Ever thine. Ever mine. Ever ours. – Ludwig van Beethoven napoLeon Bonaparte & Joséphine de Beauharnais Joséphine de Beauharnais was a socialite who was well known throughout the salons in Paris and had an affliction for men in power, both political and military. When Napoleon Bonaparte first met Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie, known later as Joséphine, he was instantly infatuated with her. Six years his senior and a widow with two children, Joséphine’s feelings towards Napoleon were not as strong. Their love story was one full of adultery and scandal from the very start. Only two days after their wedding day, Napoleon left on a military campaign in Italy. Joséphine, who stayed behind in Paris, began an affair with Lieutenant Hippolyte Charles. While away, Napoleon found out about his wife’s infidelity and soon started an affair on his own. When Joséphine found out about Napoleon’s infidelity, her feelings became much stronger for her husband and, after this time, there were no further reports of Joséphine’s affairs. However, Napoleon’s love for her was never the same. As time went on, it became apparent that Joséphine was unable to have children, prompting Napoleon to divorce her and instead marry Marie-Louise of Austria (Duchess of Parma), who gave birth to his long-awaited heir. However, despite Joséphine’s infidelity, their divorce and his remarriage, Napoleon’s last words are said to be: “France, the Army, the Head of the Army, Joséphine.” Since I left you, I have been constantly depressed. My happiness is to be near you. Victoria was most pleased with her new husband and wrote to her uncle Leopold to thank him, “The prospect of great happiness you have contributed to give me in the person of dear Albert. He possesses every quality that can be desired to make me perfectly happy.” Victoria relied heavily on Albert, and it is evident that during his lifetime she was most active as a ruler. They had a large family of nine children and lived a very happy life for 21 years until Prince Albert’s death of typhoid on December 14, 1861. Victoria, distraught by his death, remained in mourning attire until her death on January 22, 1901.

eLizaBeth tayLor & richard Burton Known as the most passionate love story ever told, it had the makings of a Hollywood movie. elizabeth and Richard married each other twice; he was her fifth and sixth husband (of an eventual eight). Their union was probably the most notorious and dramatic of the 20th century. The two were said to be consumed with one another. The romance began while filming Cleopatra in 1963. It was reported that their first on-screen kiss went on long after the director said “cut”. Both were married when they met, but, as is done in Hollywood, both divorced their respective spouses to marry each other in 1964. Ten years later, however, they divorced, due to Richard’s affair with a younger co-star. Then, in 1975, married again – and divorced soon after. “Richard and I had an incredible chemistry together. We couldn’t get enough of each other,” elizabeth once said. Their relationship was so fiery; even the Vatican condemned it as “erotic vagrancy”. Here are two letters written by Richard to elizabeth, one of her beauty and the other after the relationship had ended. Johnny cash & June carter On February 22, 1968, Johnny Cash proposed to June Carter, while they were performing together on stage at the London Ice House, Ontario, Canada. The two first met backstage at the Grand Ole Opry in 1956. Carter was singing background vocals for elvis Presley, and Cash was married to his first wife, Vivian Liberto. The couple were married two weeks after proposing, on March 1, 1968, and went on to have one child together, John Carter Cash, born in 1970. The two frequently performed together and released several albums including Carryin’ on With Johnny Cash and June Carter, Johnny & June and June Carter and Johnny Cash: Duets. June was a light in Cash’s life and helped him battle his many addictions.

“The love that John and I share with our love for Christ is one of the most precious gifts God could have given us,” June Carter said. On May 15, 2003, June passed away only to be followed by Cash, less than four months later, on September 12. Known for his way with words, Cash gave his wife a love letter in 1994, for her 65th birthday. This was named the greatest love letter of all time in 2015. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted. However, on the positive side of this was the space left behind; the resultant space with a stream boundary became the focal point. raking ceilings in both dwellings meant the landscape was drawing you out into it. The stream outlook was always part of your day-to-day as you make your way through the home, with the kitchen as the focal point.”

From the street view, the home deceptively looks like one house, but find the right angle, and you’ll get a glimpse of the stream between the two homes – a clever outcome of thoughtful considerations in a unique landscape. “What could have been a single building was then split to entice a glimpse to the natural waterway via a narrow separation. The dwellings are slightly offset, giving each home the ability to receive an abundance of natural light without compromising privacy to the living and private spaces.” The exterior displays a compelling expression of white plaster finish and vertical cedar cladding with a smattering of metal, creating an edgy and modern architectural shape of the two homes. “each home consists of plastered half gables rising up toward the centre, encapsulating the softer material palette of the rich natural cedar, which is running through the centre and out towards the stream.” Both homes have large living spaces thanks to the raked ceilings, which maximise the volume and allows natural light to reach greater depths. Complete with a garage, the ground floor contains the main living areas, intentionally placed along the northern edge to make the most of the view: the open-plan kitchen and dining room, guest bedroom with bathroom and two living rooms separated by sliding doors allowing the occupants to adapt the space whenever they needed to. The upper floor has an additional four bedrooms, including one bathroom to share and a master bedroom with en suite and faces the stream. “Access to the private spaces on the first floor is via a unique stair in each dwelling. each a focal point when migrating from the entrance through to the living spaces. One with a wine rack within its undercroft, the other with a subtle randomness of tread creating a small study nook under the landing.”

In terms of shape and form, in 2017, we will see a slight move away from organic towards geometric shapes in furniture, fashion, design and homeware. Colours will be based on a more muted palette with a focus on texture as this gives product longevity. Brass will still be popular but there will be alternatives. For example, the Midnight Pendant released in New York and London by Resident was presented in a brushed stainless finish, and the Border Side Table by Simon James uses brass for the legs but in an aged oxidised finish that softens the look. FINDING A CONNECTION Discovering artwork close to her heart, Anne Hudson takes us on a journey through her childhood.

Painter and jeweller Barry Clarke was born in Surrey, England, and, after a period working in the British Merchant Navy came to New Zealand in 1972. Since then the sea has always had an inﬂuence on his work. Clarke’s brooches and paintings of ships have a primitive quality; they are colourful, almost child-like and fun. Ships are the repositories of stories, and many of Clarke’s ships are part of our cultural history representing migration and trade in the mid-nineteenth century. I was thrilled to discover one of Clarke’s paintings was of the SS Orion. Once used as a troop carrier in World War II the Orion was already quite an old ship when, in 1961, my parents and four children left Tilbury Docks, London, for a new life in New Zealand. After the torment of one of the world’s roughest seas, the Bay of Biscay, we visited ﬁrst Piraeus, the port of Athens. Here we picked up the second half of the passenger list, many of whom were travelling to Australia to work on the Snowy Mountains hydro-electric scheme. The next port of call was Port Said in Egypt the gateway to the Suez Canal. Entertainers, magicians and exotic dancers boarded the boat to travel through the canal with us. What a journey, as the Orion travelled through locks passing other great ships. We saw caravans of camels travelling through a desert landscape. We had Sunday school lessons as we passed through the Red Sea creating a strong visual image of Moses parting those waters to let the Israelites through. At the end of the Red Sea, we

entered Aden where we had to anchor off shore. Aden has been a cultural crossroads for centuries. Hawkers brought small craft to the side of the boat and purchases were made via roped baskets – my ﬁrst introduction to haggling. The days were long and hot, but the swimming pool was an escape from the heat; we learnt to swim in that pool. The ship was a child’s adventure palace with staircases, lifts and liveried crewmembers. I am sure many of the adult passengers were anxious about their new lives, but in the meantime, they enjoyed parties, movies and dances; a glamorous time for all. Next call was the beautiful then-named Ceylon (Sri Lanka). We watched my mother and friend being wound into a beautiful sari and sheltered in disbelief at the intensity of a monsoon rain shower. The Orion then headed south on the long journey to Australia where we visited Fremantle, the sound of bagpipes from the shore making us homesick. Then, Adelaide, where my father was offered a job but turned it down – life could have taken another turn – on to Melbourne and then Sydney, with a memorable visit to Bondi Beach and Taronga Zoo. We arrived in Wellington on Labour Day, October 1961, but travel was not over for our family. We took the Maori to Lyttelton Harbour, then boarded a train for Christchurch, where we were met by our grandfather and driven to our new home in Hawarden, North Canterbury. A new life in a new country, one we now call home. It was a great adventure for a 10-year-old; one that sowed the seeds of a lifetime love of travel. Clarke’s Orion now hangs on my wall, an icon for my family who still remembers that amazing six-week journey to New Zealand. Take another look at the work of Barry Clarke and think of the lives and stories of all who sailed on those ships.

I’m always thrilled to enter a new year; I love the sense of promise and renewal, in addition to the mental picture I have of putting the previous year to rest. If it was an exceptional year I tell myself that it’s the first of many and I can repeat it, and if it was extremely challenging (or as tough as old boots!) then I foster the belief that it’s now in the past and things can only get better. As a natural optimist, I’m sensing 2017 will have the usual mix of ingredients. Some ups (more, please!) and a few downs, lots of challenges and hopefully the opportunity to grow and push forward. Economic elements including interest rates moving up or down, inflation, L.V.R. rates, and first-home ownership criteria, and let’s not forget the biggie, a new President. All of these can take their toll on a buyer’s, home owner’s (vendor’s) or sales consultant’s psyche. They can and do slow down an overheated market and rob confidence from an even one. However, there are people who – regardless of what the general consensus is – just follow their own pathway. Warren Buffet comes to mind with his statement, “a public opinion poll is no substitute for thought.” He went on to say that had he listened to the public opinion of the day, he wouldn’t have started investing, let alone bought his first property. of the most successful investors of all time, so I’m interested in his words for two reasons: his advice is simple and understandable – and it’s worked! How many times do you hear someone giving advice about real estate investment and they don’t follow what they actually preach? So, find the right people to talk with. SELECTION Landscape architect Craig Wilson gives us some tips on how to make plant selections.

Over summer you may have visited a friend’s house and admired the landscape design of their property. Chances are that a large part of what you were appreciating was a well-conceived and put-together garden design. Garden design is, at its simplest, a planting plan of the selected plants and materials for a space. At its best, it’s an art form blending horticulture, ecology and psychology that can create an amazing range of responses from those lucky enough to experience it. For many embarking on a garden design project, it can be a bit overwhelming. The range of plant choices is vast with many factors that can determine the health, longevity and success of the initial vision. If you are contemplating the design of a garden area, these thoughts will be useful to guide you in the right direction. Firstly, you will need to know what sort of garden it is you wish to create. Don’t be bound by trends, but think through what you like and what garden elements speak of your personality. Make a list of any plants you would love to use. The list you come up with may have a sentimental or emotional connection for you. Look at the space you have and its physical characteristics. How much sunlight does it get through the day and the seasons? What is the quality of the soils present? Is the site exposed to winds? These and other physical factors will limit the plants you can successfully choose to match up with the specific characteristics of your site. At a plant nursery, most of the time the plant label will describe the conditions a plant will require to thrive. Another great hint when making plant selections is to look around locally and see what’s doing well in neighbouring gardens in similar situations. There’s a good chance they will also do well at your place. Think about how much time you want to put into maintaining your new creation and be sure to tailor the design to match the energy and enthusiasm you have for gardening. Finally, be prepared to allow your garden to change with time. Gardens aren’t static, and half the fun and enjoyment can be in making adjustments here and there, removing a plant that’s not doing well or trying a new plant out that caught your eye at the nursery.

At this time of the year, things can happen in your garden very quickly- so for many of us returning from holidays of a few days or a few weeks, you may have been struck by many things needing your urgent attention before you even crossed the threshold into your home. Now is the perfect time to get inspired by the possibilities in your outdoor space and develop an action plan for the coming months to make this a reality.

Gardens often need a good soaking post holiday. If you have an irrigation system installed, consider whether it worked efficiently in your absenceare there any dry spots which suggest repairs or reconfiguration might be needed? If you don’t have an irrigation system, have any plants been damaged by a lack of water? Irrigation systems can be tailored to all budgets and be as simple or intricate as you require. Undoubtedly there will be some weeding awaiting you after your holiday. Whilst pruning is best undertaken in autumn or winter, it is a good time to evaluate which plants need a prune and any particular branches which encroach on gutters or obstruct sunlight when laden with foliage and note this for pruning time. Plants can be pruned up a few branches to allow precious sunlight in to your home. Hard pruning will also better encourage vigorous growth the following spring. Check for any pest infestations requiring treatment. It may be an issue which can be dealt with manually or require intervention with an appropriate pesticide or fungicide. Leaving a garden to it’s own devices for a period of time will highlight which plants are getting tired and past their use by date or may have become leggy. It provides the perfect opportunity to replace any tired plants and rejuvenate your garden with new species.

When contemplating changes in your outdoors, be aware of the timeframes involved for design and construction. Once you engage a landscape architect, the design phase can take approximately 3 months depending on tweaks and changes. A residential landscaping project may take 6-8 weeks for construction although bigger commercial projects will probably take longer. Good communication with your Landscape Architect is vital to ensure you are entirely satisfied with the completed project. Telling your Landscape Architect how you use your outdoor space and what works and what doesn’t will ensure the design specifically encapsulates your lifestyle. Being clear about your budget is also important to ensure the Landscape Architect works within your financial parameters. CHanel – RedeFining SHaPeS Karl Lagerfeld’s latest haute couture collection, shown in the Grand Palais in Paris last month, took many of the fashion elite by surprise. Famously known for promoting a slender figure and shape, Lagerfeld has now proposed a new catwalk silhouette. By sculpting skirts into ovoid shapes and padding out slender hips, the inspiration for the silhouette was Alberto Giacometti’s 1920s sculpture Spoon Woman. The colour scheme of the collection and setting paid homage to a British interior designer of the same era, Syrie Maugham. The white catwalk and seating alluded to the all-white interiors Maugham popularised. The centrepiece of mirrored screens was another Maugham-inspired touch. The show was then closed by Lily-Rose Depp in a stunning pink wedding dress.

Sometimes we can forget about the adventures to be had right out on our doorstep. It was only while I was guiding tourists through the Milford Track, and heard feedback from walkers as they marvelled at the views, that I began to appreciate exactly what they came to New Zealand for – to see our truly beautiful country. Before setting out on your next journey, I recommend you pack right, pack light and look after your feet. Here are some of my favourite South Island walks. HOOKER VALLEY TRACK Location: Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park (Canterbury) Duration: Under four hours (13km total trip) Difﬁculty: Easy Condition: Track is of a high standard Known for: An unreal glacier experience On this walk, you’ll cross three beautiful swing bridges while winding your way through the Hooker Valley to the glacier lake, which offers breath-taking views of Aoraki/Mt Cook, Hooker Glacier, Du Faur Peak and the Southern Alps. During summer, walkers can see icebergs ﬂoating in Hooker Lake. After storms the icebergs are often washed onto the shoreline, giving you a chance to explore the giant ice formations.

ROUTEBURN TRACK Location: Fiordland National Park and Mount Aspiring National Park (Otago) Duration: Two to three days (32km one way) Difﬁculty: Moderate Condition: Track is of high standard Known for: Great alpine adventure Take your time walking from the Harris Saddle Shelter to Falls Hutt and look left to see Mt Xenicus, the stunning Lake Harris and Valley of the Trolls. This is a highlight of the tramp and excellent place to see our native rock wren (pīwauwau).

You must go to the ‘12-second drop’ at the top of Mackinnon Pass. The view will knock you off your feet as you can see all of Arthur Valley – a just reward for hard work. During November and December, keep your eye out for endangered blue duck (whio) ducklings around the eight-mile marker. The track’s finish line is at Sandfly Point in the Milford Sound – I might be biased, but it doesn’t get much better than that.

My introduction to Jaguar’s new F-Pace sport utility vehicle was a little out of the ordinary. At first use, I was driving at considerable speed on a slalom course on one of the runways at the old Wigram Air Force base. It was part of an event titled the Jaguar Art of Performance Tour, which showcased various Jaguar models in a sporty environment. The F-Pace was well suited to the challenge, even against its far sportier stablemates, the heritage for which we know Jaguar was immediately evident. The vehicle this evaluation focuses on is a little different to the one I drove at Wigram, instead of being diesel-powered, it has a 3-litre supercharged V6 engine. English car makers are no strangers to the supercharging concept, they’ve been doing it since Bentley in the 1930s, and Jaguar’s partner Land Rover have produced many Range Rover models with superchargers. With that statement in mind, the F-Pace arrives here in six variations with three engine options, the 2-litre four-cylinder diesel as mentioned, a 3-litre V6 diesel and two supercharged V6s depending on how much power you want to own – 250kW or 280kW. The range spans from $95,000 to $130,000 for the range-topper as tested. For that money you get a wealth of specification, all of the items you would expect in a luxury car, and those fitting the Jaguar brand are fitted to the F-Pace. The concept of the F-Pace is different to that of any Jaguar I’ve driven before. As a company, Jaguar knew that it would have to produce an SUV in order to stay competitive in the global market. The way it has done that is far from traditional, the F-Pace S has style and design flair, it is far from boxy, yet still offers the practicality we demand from SUVs, along with providing stunning performance. Against its V8 powered stablemates the F-Pace’s 2995cc engine may seem a little underwhelming, but at 280kW and 450Nm it does have enormous get-up-and-go. According to Jaguar, the S will scamper to 100km/h from a standstill in 5.1sec, and it will lunge

through a highway overtake in 3.8sec. Jaguar also claims a 250km/h top speed. Drive flows through an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is a classy unit, with ratios and shift patterns well suited to the strong boost of supercharged power. As you would expect, there are sport shift protocols and an eco mode for those inevitable times when you are caught up in traffic. In eco mode, there is a gentle response to the accelerator, which under those circumstances is by far the best option. For the Jaguar enthusiast who is familiar with the centre consolemounted gearshift dial, it is there in the F-Pace. Early January was a good time to be on the road evaluating as there was little traffic and dry roads. I took the test car on a long highway loop just east of the main divide on the scenic route SH72. The F-Pace cruises much like its high-profile stablemates. It is quiet and takes on quite a sporty persona, unlike many of the SUVs

in today’s market. There is little indication of height (1652mm), the centre of gravity seems low, body movement over the suspension is controlled and balanced. The fully independent system can be felt working, especially the rear linkages, but you would expect that from Jaguar; as a company it builds vehicles that offer an involving driving experience. The F-Pace has drive to all four wheels, and it is an adaptive system, sending power to the rear when grip is threatened. In most cases the F-Pace would have a life on-road, it’s not an actual off-roader as such, but with 213mm of ground clearance, it does have useful crosscountry ability. Providing the grip are huge Continental tyres (255/50 x 20in) which send strong information to the driver. On the Wigram slalom course, there was little indication of push at the front or oversteer from the rear; steerage is direct and turn-in strong and decisive. The F-Pace in this form is also a frugal highway cruiser. The engine is loping along slowly at just 1700rpm at 100km/h sipping fuel at the rate of just 7.5-litre per 100km (38mpg). Jaguar claims an 8.9l/100km (32mpg) combined cycle average, which sits well with the trip computer readout of 10l/100km (28mpg) during my four days with the evaluation car. Jaguar’s first foray into the sport utility vehicle market is a result of many years of development; the F-Pace is a late entry, but you can guarantee it has been engineered so that it won’t disappoint. You can certainly see that in its styling; it is a cross between sporty and functionality, and as a Jaguar owner, you wouldn’t want anything less. I enjoyed my time with the vehicle; I’d be torn between petrol and diesel power and I hope to drive the latter at some point. However, in the interim, I’m sold. If I was a luxury car SUV buyer, it would be the top of my list.

Investing in property has long been the Kiwi dream – it’s something known, tangible and continues to be a proven way to make money, writes Michael Karabassis. Along with many of my friends and associates, the majority of my clients opt for property investment as a reliable way to build wealth. It is still considered the best way to achieve ‘passive income’ – where you receive cash flow from something that requires minimal ongoing effort and doesn’t rely on your time. However, such investment is a slow burn. It’s mostly a long-term way to slowly build wealth and add to retirement savings. Cantabrians who invest in properties in addition to their full-time job might, over time, obtain two or three investment properties. If financed correctly, this investment could provide a substantial passive income every week and contribute to their retirement income so they’re not solely reliant on KiwiSaver – a great way to ensure lifestyles can be maintained when there’s no longer a regular wage coming in. A quicker way to build wealth might be through property development by buying a house, renovating to add value and selling for profit. Once sold, of course, this does not provide consistent longterm income. Done right, property development will give owners a lump-sum profit. We see a lot of full-time investors undertake some property development as this will often provide a cash deposit to invest in longer-term, income-generating projects. As a result of the Reserve Bank’s announcement last year of changes for loan-to-value ratio (LVR) rules, property investors must have a 40 per cent deposit for any new properties. This is making it more difficult for existing “recreational” investors to keep purchasing properties as taking equity gained from an existing rental property to buy a new one often won’t cover the 40 per cent deposit. However, these conditions bode well for current property owners who have paid off a considerable part of their mortgage and want

to buy their first investment property. They’ll have a lot of equity in their home to withdraw and use as a deposit for the new property. For those in this position, now is the prime time to invest, especially if your home is freehold. For my clients in their late forties and fifties, there is a common misconception that it’s too late to start property investment. I consistently tell them, it’s never too late. Although the retirement age is 65 (for most jobs this is not compulsory), even if you choose to leave full employment then there is plenty of time to make gains and secure a passive income for top-ups to any superannuation. I also find that when most people say to me they want to be wealthy, what they really want is to be income rich. Having money tied up in assets is pointless if you don’t have any money coming in. Property investment is a great way to ensure you have a continuous cash flow. Remember, as an investor, the risk to that cash flow can actually be decreased by investing in several properties. This is because if you have only one property and that becomes vacant, you then have a 100 per cent liability. If you have two or three, if one property isn’t rented the cost of that empty property is covered by the income of the other two, after any required maintenance costs or other expenses. Get advice, do some research, and consider investing in property now – it can be an excellent way to achieve long-term, consistent wealth.

MadaM woo to oPen Michelin-star chef Josh Emett and business partner Fleur Caulton will open their acclaimed Malaysian restaurant Madam Woo in Christchurch on February 16. Appealing to the Kiwi sense of humour, the Naughty Pig, Three Alcoholics and Sexy Little Duck are worth a try if you’re craving something a little different. With a focus on flavour, Thai Chef’s menu aims to satisfy diners seeking tradition with a twist. our waitress walks us through the seven stages of spiciness available with each dish, ranging from “no spice” to “bloody hot”. For those less adventurous, like myself, I recommend sticking to the conservative end of the spectrum. If you’re after a kick, the staff will be more than happy to have the kitchen add additional chillies to your dish to bring it up a notch – or three. The food is exquisite, with a noticeable attention to detail, and even the simplest of dishes served with flair. The flair extends to the cocktail menu as well, meaning I can order a mango daiquiri with my go-to Thai dish, Massaman curry. The curry is served with coconut rice and warmed over a tea light candle. Another favourite is the Naughty Pig with pickled chilli, which brings out an intense flavour with every bite. The dessert menu is equally as enticing, featuring unique treats like the Siam brûlée. This Thai treat is served with palm sugar, sweet sticky rice and mango sorbet. With full bellies, we check out the the adjacent Sukhu Tiger entertainment lounge, which accommodates group functions and hosts karaoke nights. Upon setting foot inside this spacious establishment, you immediately forget about its modular construction methods. DAFFYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S GIN GARDEN PARTY The gentle summer day hung like a pastel gown around the grounds of Riccarton House and delicate, sensual light caressed the flowers. Guests mingled and chatted as Daffyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gin Garden Party got into full swing. The glorious clear nectar born of an ancient copper still and nurtured with exotic botanicals, was given forth for the delectation of all present. A glass of the spirit partnered with tonic water, was presented upon arrival in prelude to the three cocktails which, masterfully mixed, proved the highlights of the afternoon. This latest brand of liquid elegance provided a sophisticated and refreshing interlude on a humid Saturday.
